Music has always been a huge part of my life — my memories arrive with a soundtrack. I came of age in the 90s on Nirvana and Depeche Mode, making the trek from Reno to San Francisco for as much live music as I could afford.
I didn't start photographing it until I moved to Fort Collins, where the small but connected music community became my lifeline when I didn't really know anyone and was looking for something to belong to. That has continued as I make a new life in France. There is just something about sharing a night with strangers — conversations come easily, and the music ties us together.
These are a few of my favorites over the years. Mostly small venues. Regional artists sharing their music because they love it, not because they hope to become famous. That's the beauty of artists: we do it because there is a need to create and share, and the connections we make from that sustain us.
